Adelaide Airport Campervan Hire

Can I rent a campervan at the airport in Adelaide?

While there are only car rental desks directly at Adelaide Airport (ADL), there are several campervan rental companies within 0.8–9.7 km.

Britz, Maui and Mighty Campers are within walking distance from the main terminal.

The Self-drive Holiday in Adelaide

Hiring a campervan in Adelaide is the most cost-effective, convenient, and fun way to explore South Australia.

Here’s why you should hire a campervan in Adelaide:

  • Affordable: Don’t pay sky-high hotel and car hire rates. A campervan lets you roll your transport and accommodation expenses into one.

  • Less driving: You won’t have to double back to your accommodation after a long day of sightseeing. With a campervan, you can drive to the nearest campsite and retire for the night.

  • Freedom and flexibility: No need to pre-book a rigid itinerary of tours and hotels. A campervan gives you the freedom to explore South Australia on a whim.

  • On-board amenities: Everything you need is in the campervan with you, from freshwater to clean clothes and a fridge full of food.

  • Self-catering: Save stacks of cash by cooking meals while gallivanting around South Australia. Forget waiting around in stuffy restaurants. A campervan lets you enjoy impromptu open-air picnics with an epic view.

Remember these helpful tips when driving around Adelaide in a campervan hire:

  1. All traffic moves on the left-hand side.
  2. Seatbelts and child restraints are compulsory.
  3. Carry a valid driver's licence when travelling.
  4. Traffic moves clockwise around the roundabout.
  5. There are currently no toll roads in South Australia (including Adelaide).
  6. Watch out for wildlife, especially around dawn, dusk and when travelling at night. Country roads and long stretches of the open road are notorious for crossing wildlife.
  7. For fully licensed drivers, the blood alcohol content limit in South Australia is 0.05% (learner/provisional and some professional drivers must be 0.00%).
  8. Default speed limits in South Australia are 50 km/h for built-up residential areas and 100 km/h for roads outside built-up areas unless indicated otherwise. School zones are commonly 25 km/h when children are present, and some locations also have 40 km/h time-based school speed limits during drop-off/pick-up times. Always pay attention to posted speed limit signs and adjust your speed accordingly.

Travel Tips for Adelaide

How can you save money on a campervan vacation in Adelaide?

Travelling by campervan is the most cost-effective way to explore Adelaide and beyond. The savvy shoestring traveller can reduce expenses further by following these nifty money-saving tips.

Travel off-season: Caravan parks and hire fees surge during high season. Avoid major holidays like the Christmas/New Year period, Easter, and South Australian school holidays to save.

Book early: Like airlines, campervan hire companies adjust their prices according to availability. Booking early often means better rates.

Choose a modest vehicle: A basic, budget-friendly campervan will cost a fraction of a lavish, decked-out motorhome. If you’re travelling for under a week, you can save costs this way by opting out of all the luxuries.

Minimise backtracking: Plan a route that reduces backtracking to save big bucks at the gasoline pump.

Choose your gas stations: Some South Australian gas stations cost significantly more than others. Use an app like Petrol Spy to compare prices and refuel accordingly.

Buddy up: Travelling with a friend lets you share expenses for gasoline, campgrounds, and campervan hires. Don’t know anyone who wants to come? Consider searching for travel buddies on social media (always pre-vet candidates).

Use low-cost campsites: Flashy holiday parks with top-tier amenities cost a sizeable sum. Give these a wide berth in favour of free or low-cost bush camps.

Find free activities: Ticketed attractions in Australia tend to be quite pricey. However, aside from a national park pass, hiking is entirely free. If you can fit it in, consider packing your mountain bike, surfboard, or inflatable kayak for more free thrills.

Cook at home: Eating out gets expensive in South Australia, but self-catering will slash your daily spend. Give those pricey restaurants a miss and unleash your inner master chef with your camper’s built-in kitchen.

When is the best time to go campervanning in Adelaide?

The ideal season for a campervan trip to Adelaide and the surrounding region is autumn or spring. Specifically, aim to travel during March and April or October and November to get the most temperate weather. Expect average daily highs and lows of around 22–26°C / 12–15°C.

South Australia is the country’s driest state, so don’t expect lush rainforests at any time of year. Nonetheless, spring brings the most greenery to the region, while the autumn foliage looks spectacular in the Adelaide Hills.

The most popular season for a campervan holiday in South Australia is summer, when average daily temperatures range from 29°C to 17°C. However, the mercury may rise to a scorching 40°C or more. Don’t even think about hiking in the outback during the sweltering summer months.

Winters get pretty nippy in Adelaide, with average daily highs and lows hovering around 15–16°C / 7–8°C. Nonetheless, thinner crowds and lower prices may prove all too tempting for hardy, budget-oriented travellers. Winter brings peak season to the outback; it’s the perfect time to explore the Flinders Ranges or cross the border into the Northern Territory.

South Australia is fittingly known as the “Festival State”. Some of the top Adelaide shindigs include the Fringe Festival (Feb-Mar), the Adelaide Festival (late Feb–Mar), Feast Festival (Nov), the Adelaide Film Festival (Oct), and Illuminate Adelaide (Jul).

How long do you need in Adelaide for an RV vacation?

The ideal timeframe for a road trip from Adelaide depends on your interests, travel style, and bucket list destinations. The capital itself only takes two or three days to explore.

Craving to sip South Australia's top wines?

You could savour premium wine at an esteemed SA winery like Barossa or McLaren Vale in just one day. A week would allow time to sample them all.

If the peninsulas beckon, allow three or four days for each. Kangaroo Island warrants five to seven days of exploration; allow about the same for the return trip to Flinders Ranges.

Parking a Campervan in Adelaide

What are some of the best places to park a campervan in Adelaide?

Parking is tight in Adelaide’s compact CBD. Available spots tend to get snapped up fast, and on-street spaces have varied time limits.

The City of Adelaide Council publishes an interactive CBD parking map covering all council-run spaces. Furthermore, Parkopedia aggregates council and privately owned parking lots into one handy comparison tool.

On the bright side, CBD parking is much cheaper than other Australian capitals. Expect to pay $6-8 per hour.

Bumper-to-bumper traffic and limited parking prompt most motorhome travellers to avoid driving in the CBD. Consider using the Park ‘n’ Ride program, where you leave your vehicle in a nearby suburb and catch public transport into the centre. Most have plenty of space to accommodate large motorhomes.

Where can you park a campervan overnight in Adelaide?

Adelaide has several holiday parks scattered around the city. The Adelaide Showground Caravan Park and Adelaide Caravan Park are the most central options. Adelaide Showground Caravan Park is about 5 minutes from the CBD, and Adelaide Caravan Park is about 2 km from the CBD.**

Council by-laws prohibit camping or remaining overnight on City of Adelaide local government land (including in a vehicle) without permission.

If you’d like to stay overnight near Adelaide in a secluded bushland setting, try the Shiloh Hills or Pink Gum campgrounds.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I take a campervan to Kangaroo Island?

Yes, but supplier policies vary. While most hire companies restrict travel on unsealed roads, some allow short, well-maintained access roads to recognised campgrounds—check your hire agreement before driving on any unsealed roads on Kangaroo Island (for both 2WD and 4WD campers).

In order to get to Kangaroo Island, you will need to book a ferry; please note that this is the responsibility of the hirer. Check with your hire supplier to see if any further restrictions apply.

Is RV rental with unlimited kilometres available?

Yes, generally unlimited kilometres are included for standard vehicle rentals in Australia. Limits are placed on some types of vehicles e.g. 4x4 campers. The comparison tool will show you if your preferred vehicle has unlimited kilometres included or if the kilometre allowance is restricted.

Is free camping allowed?

Free camping rules vary by land manager and local council. In and around central Adelaide, overnight stays in public places (including sleeping in a vehicle) are generally not permitted under local by-laws, so use designated campgrounds/holiday parks.

Some popular places to stay in Adelaide include Brighton Caravan Park, Discovery Parks Adelaide Beachfront and Levi Adelaide Holiday Park.

Adelaide is a great base for a campervan holiday, with many road trip destinations to explore in South Australia:

  • Wine regions on the Fleurieu Peninsula, Barossa Valley and Clare Valley
  • Onkaparinga River National Park
  • Kangaroo Island
  • The Limestone Coast

What kind of licence do you need to rent a campervan in Adelaide?

If you’re Australian, you’ll need a full and valid Class C (car) licence (no learner’s licence) to hire a campervan in Adelaide.
International travellers need a full car licence—if it’s not in English, you’ll also need an International Driving Permit (IDP) or an official English translation.
Under 21? Some smaller campervans may be available from 18+, but most motorhomes require drivers to be 21+; drivers under 25 usually pay a young-driver surcharge.

Can additional drivers be added to the RV rental agreement?

Yes, it’s standard for most companies to allow an additional driver. This driver and any others must be named on the rental agreement and there may be a nominal fee.

Additional drivers must also hold an appropriate driver’s licence and must meet driver age requirements.

Do I have to pay a bond (security deposit) when renting my vehicle?

When renting a vehicle, it is standard to be charged a bond (security deposit), also known as ‘excess’, which is the amount the renter is liable to cover in the event of an accident or damage to the vehicle. The bond amount fluctuates based on the insurance package selected at the time of rental and is charged and debited on the renters’ credit or debit card.

Note: policies vary from supplier to supplier. Always check the T&Cs for your rental.
