Driving a Campervan around Malmö
- The Øresund Bridge toll uses automatic cameras to scan registration plates. The regular price for a motorhome up to 10 metres is about 940 DKK one way as of January 2026.
- The park-and-ride car park at Hyllie accepts motorhomes up to 3.1 metres high and connects to a six-minute train ride to Central Station.
- Street parking has different zones across the city. You can pay at parking machines or with the ‘PMalmö’ mobile app. There is a two-hour parking limit in the city centre zone.
- Environmental zone (Miljözon) rules inside Malmö target heavy diesel trucks. Most campervans under 3.5 tonnes can enter the city.
- The E6 and E20 ring roads keep through-traffic away from the city centre and provide fast access towards Gothenburg and Copenhagen.
- You can park overnight on public streets for up to 24 hours unless local signs show a shorter time limit.
- Strong coastal winds are common near the waterfront. Make sure to secure awnings and choose a sheltered parking spot when possible.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is wild camping in a motorhome permitted in Sweden?
Swedish rules mean you generally can’t camp off-road in a motorhome: driving/parking in off-road terrain (terräng) is prohibited, and setting up/parking a motorhome in nature is not covered by Allemansrätten (the Right of Public Access). This means wild/free camping in a motorhome is generally not permitted except where you are legally parked and local rules/signage allow overnight stays.
The country has more than 1,000 campsites. Prices vary widely by season and facilities, check the campsite/booking site for current rates.
Sweden also has around 270 Trafikverket rest stops (rastplatser) which may allow you to stay for a night (generally up to 24 hours unless signposted otherwise). Check the signposts or visit an information centre for regulations regarding a specific area.
What kind of licence do you need to hire a campervan in Sweden?
Typical hire requirements: a standard Category B driving licence in date. If the licence is not issued in a Latin alphabet, an official translation or an International Driving Permit (IDP) may be required by some companies.
Hire companies commonly set a minimum age (often 21) and may charge an insurance or young-driver surcharge for drivers under 25. Many companies also require you to have held your driving licence for at least one year; check the specific hire company’s terms before booking.
