Driving a Campervan around New York
- All Hudson River crossings into Manhattan require electronic payment. With an E-ZPass device a camper under 7 ft 6 in (2.3 metres) pays about $9–$12 while Tolls by Mail costs more.
- RVs that carry propane gas are not allowed in the Holland and Lincoln tunnels. Use the George Washington Bridge instead.
- Large vehicles may not park on city streets from midnight to 06:00. Fines can exceed $250 for each violation.
- Most Midtown car parks have height limits of 6 ft 8 in (2 metres). Surface car parks marked "Oversize OK" on the West Side are the best option for short stays.
- Free waste dump stations are limited. Liberty Harbour RV Park has a paid facility and some New Jersey Turnpike service areas open theirs during summer months.
- Friday afternoon traffic becomes heavy early on I-95 and the Garden State Parkway. Plan to reach campgrounds before 14:00.
- Park-and-ride car parks in Secaucus and Weehawken accept motorhomes for day visits and connect to Midtown by ferry or express bus.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does my motorhome come with unlimited mileage?
The majority of campervan hire suppliers in the US do not include unlimited miles as a standard hire inclusion.
In most cases, miles are charged per mile or via prepaid mileage packs (for example, 100-mile packs), and additional fees will be incurred if you exceed what you’ve purchased/allowed. Refund rules vary by supplier—some refund unused estimated mileage deposits, while others do not refund unused prepaid miles. Some suppliers do include unlimited miles as standard.

Where can I camp in a motorhome in New York?
As in the rest of America, free camping is only allowed in designated areas, which can include national parks, state parks, truck stops or rest stops as well as certain car parks with permission from the store manager.
Campgrounds are widely available throughout the state, and a stay at a campsite will usually cost around $15–50 (USD).
There are sites available to suit all vehicle types, from travel trailers up to larger motorhomes
What licence do you need to drive a campervan in the USA?
All drivers must have a current and full driving licence to hire a vehicle. Foreign licences are generally acceptable if they are in English or accompanied by an accredited English translation, otherwise, an International Driving Permit is required.
In addition to your driving licence, you will often be required to show your passport at the time of pick-up.
Some companies may require an IDP or official English translation depending on the language of your licence. For example, Road Bear requires an international driving licence translation if the original licence doesn't have an English translation, and Britz recommends an international driving licence for translation purposes.
Can I rent a campervan in the US if I’m under 21?
Most campervan rental suppliers in the USA require the main driver to be 21 years of age or older. A full driver’s licence is required.
Some companies require the driver to be 25 or older. Our comparison tool will show you which vehicles are available for your age bracket.
Can I rent a one-way campervan in the US?
Yes, a large number of campervan rental companies allow for one-way rentals. One-way rentals are not available on all routes, and additional fees apply, depending on the pick-up and drop-off locations.
Our comparison tool will automatically factor in rental costs between two locations and show you which vehicles are available on your preferred route.
Can I explore New York City in a motorhome?
Most motorhome rental suppliers restrict access to the city centre of New York in your rental vehicle. Some of the streets in New York are very narrow, and the heavy volume of traffic makes accidents much more likely.
It is still possible to explore New York, however, since many RV parks are located on the outskirts of the city. Public transport in New York City is very reliable, allowing you to leave your motorhome at the park and head into the city centre.
Some popular choices near New York City include Liberty Harbour RV Park, Beaver Pond Campground and New York City North/Newburgh KOA Holiday Park.
