Driving an RV around Sardinia

  • Reach the island by ferry from mainland Italy (Genoa, Livorno, Civitavecchia) or France (Marseille). Main ferry ports in Sardinia are Olbia, Golfo Aranci, Porto Torres, Cagliari and Arbatax.
  • Roads have no tolls. The main highway SS131 Carlo Felice runs 226 kilometres north to south, connecting Porto Torres, Sassari, Oristano and Cagliari.
  • No emission zone stickers are required. Historic downtowns in Cagliari, Alghero and Sassari have restricted traffic zones (ZTL) that issue fines to unauthorized vehicles. Watch for signs.
  • Camping outside authorized areas is restricted and fines are enforced. Use official campgrounds or Aree di Sosta (RV service areas) which typically cost 5 to 20 euros per night and provide water and waste disposal.
  • Coastal roads can be narrow and busy during summer. Fill your fuel tank before driving to remote areas and allow extra travel time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is wild camping in an RV allowed in Italy?

Wild camping rules are determined by region, but it is generally prohibited in Italy, and fines can be heavy (€100-500). If unsure about a certain region, check online or visit an information centre.

There are plenty of campsites in Italy starting around €20 ($21 USD) per night

What kind of licence do I need to drive an RV in Italy?

All drivers must have a current and full driver’s licence to rent a vehicle.

For foreign licences, an International Driving Permit is required. In addition, some companies require the driver to have held your licence for a certain period of time (usually 1-3 years).
