UK motorhome rental market: size and growth

How big is the UK motorhome and campervan rental market?

The UK RV rental market generated US$52.8 million in revenue in 2021 and is forecast to reach US$100.6 million by 2030.1

  • That would be a 90% rise over the decade, at an expected 7.4% annual growth rate from 2022 to 2030.1

No published figure tracks the share of UK RV rentals made through peer-to-peer platforms, because industry data counts vehicle registrations rather than rentals. A few platforms do publish UK figures:

  • One of the larger platforms handled 5,249 UK bookings in the year to June 2025, 10% fewer than the year before, and their value fell 20%.4
  • Another platform’s UK bookings rose 41% in 2020, as domestic road trips took off during the pandemic.5

The model has grown quickly in Europe, though. In 2023, two of the biggest platforms merged into one listing 30,000 campervans and serving 350,000 travellers a year.6

How much can you earn renting out your motorhome in the UK?

  • The largest European platform, which now handles all UK listings for its group,12 says owners who hire out occasionally earn around £3,500 a year, those who hire out more often up to £6,000, and its top 10 up to £10,000.3
  • Another says UK owners earn up to £10,000 a year.10

Do you need special insurance to rent out your motorhome?

Yes. Hiring out needs insurance that covers self-drive hire. The two main options are an annual self-drive hire policy or pay-as-you-go cover for each booking.13

For example, the largest European platform offers day insurance for each booking. It deducts a fixed £13–£20 per booked day from the owner's earnings, depending on the vehicle's value, and claims don't affect the owner's no-claims bonus.14

Is motorhome rental income taxable?

Income from hiring out your motorhome can count as trading income. HMRC gives a tax-free trading allowance of up to £1,000 a year. Above that, you can deduct either the allowance or your actual expenses, but not both.15
