Frequently Asked Questions

Can I rent a VW campervan?

The VW California camper is a favourite for campervan vacations and is offered for rent by several UK brands. Use our search tool to check availability and prices across multiple companies.

In general, vintage VW campervans are not offered by the major motorhome rental companies. However, they may be available from specialised rental companies.

Can you park an RV anywhere overnight in the UK?

Generally, no. Land in the UK is usually privately owned, and it is not possible to wild camp without obtaining prior approval. Doing so without approval is a breach of the law.

As wild camping (free camping) laws can vary in the UK, it pays to check in advance to find out the rules and regulations for the area you’re planning on travelling to. In England and Wales, it is illegal without prior approval, but in Scotland, for example, the laws can be much more relaxed.

Campsites are widely available in the UK, however, and are quite affordable, starting at around £12 per night. Many national parks also allow you to camp overnight. Details can be found here: https://www.nationalparks.uk/visiting/outdoor-activities/camping.

Check with the local government or a visitor information centre if you are unsure of the regulations in a specific area.

Can I bring my pet with me when renting an RV?

Yes, some rental companies in the UK are pet-friendly. These include McRent, Camper Rental UK, Just Go, Apollo, Bunk Campers, Rent Easy, Easy Campervan Hire, and Rockin Vans.

Spaceships and AUK Motorhome Hire do not allow pets in their vehicles.

With all these companies, approval must be obtained prior to your rental. A service fee will also be charged.

It is your responsibility to ensure the cleanliness of the vehicle and you will be liable for any damages caused as a result of bringing a pet on board.

The renter is also responsible for the safe transport of any domestic animals according to local regulations as well as for compliance with any entry restrictions and vaccinations.

Can I travel to mainland Europe?

Yes, many rental companies allow travel into Europe with your rental vehicle, and this can be a popular way to get the most out of your vacation.

To access parts of Europe, you will need to take a ferry, which must be booked in advance and is the responsibility of the renter. Booking a ferry is relatively easy, and our support team is available to help with any questions you may have.

Requirements can differ between rental companies, but you will generally need to pay additional insurance. You may also need headlamp converters and a VOH certificate for border crossings. These can usually be rented from the company for a small fee (around £10).

Note that while the UK and Ireland drive on the left side of the road, the majority of Europe drives on the right. Be prepared to make the change and check for any further changes in road rules that may apply.

Most popular locations are open for travel; however, some rental companies may restrict travel to certain countries, such as Russia or Ukraine. Check with your rental company to see if any extra restrictions apply.

Are unlimited kilometres included in my campervan rental?

Yes, unlimited kilometres are generally included for standard vehicle rentals in the UK. Our comparison tool will show you if your preferred vehicle has this included or if daily kilometres are restricted.

What kind of licence do I need to drive an RV in the UK?

All drivers must have a current and full driver’s licence to rent a vehicle. If your licence is from the UK it must entitle you to drive a category B vehicle up to 3500 kg. If you have demerit points on your licence or any convictions, extra fees or restrictions may apply.

Foreign licences are acceptable if they are in English or accompanied by an accredited English translation, otherwise, an International Driving Permit is required.

Can I rent an RV in the UK if I’m under 21?

Most RV rental companies in the UK require the driver to be 21 years of age or older. In addition, you must have held your licence for a specific period of time (generally between 2-5 years). Certain vehicles may be restricted to those under the age of 25.

Enter the driver’s age into our search tool and we will filter available vehicles to match.

Drivers need to hold a full licence and additional insurance for young drivers may also be required.

Note: policies vary from supplier to supplier. Always check the T&Cs for your rental.
