Driving a Campervan around Porto

  • Porto connects to Lisbon via the A1 motorway and to Spain's Galician coast on the A28 motorway.

  • A restricted-access zone (ZAAC) in the historic centre blocks older vehicles (pre-Euro 4 engines) on weekdays.

  • Most campervans are classified as toll Class 2 when the front-axle height is over 1.10 metres. Pay with the Via Verde electronic system or at card payment lanes.

  • Outside protected areas you may stay up to 48 hours per municipality in a self-contained motorhome. Longer stays or overnight parking in protected nature areas (Natura 2000 zones) may result in fines.

  • Park and Ride sites on the Metro do Porto network offer low-cost daily parking rates that include public transport travel to the city centre.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is free camping in a motorhome permitted in Portugal?

Wild/free camping in Portugal is not generally permitted, and enforcement can be strict in certain areas. If you’re caught breaking the rules, you may receive an on-the-spot fine.

Portugal has many campsites across the country, with prices varying widely by region and season.

Do I need a special licence to drive a camper in Portugal?

All drivers must have a current and full driver’s licence to hire a vehicle. Drivers are allowed to drive up to 6 months in Portugal without an International Driving Permit (IDP).

In addition, some campervan rental suppliers require the driver to have held their licence for a certain period of time (1–3 years).

Note: policies vary from supplier to supplier. Always check the T&Cs for your rental.
