Driving a Campervan around South Africa
- Tolls are charged on many national routes. You can pay with cash or card. Gauteng's electronic toll gantries were switched off on 11 April 2024, but electronic tags still speed payment at regular toll plazas
- Speed limits for light motorhomes are 120 km/h on freeways, 100 km/h on rural roads and 60 km/h in towns. Vehicles heavier than 3.5 tonnes are limited to 100 km/h on freeways
- You must carry two red warning triangles in your vehicle. A high-visibility vest and small fire extinguisher are strongly recommended
- Driving at night in rural areas can be dangerous due to animals and pedestrians on roads with poor lighting
- Camping outside designated sites is prohibited. Officials may issue fines in national parks or coastal reserves
- Cross-border trips to Namibia, Botswana, Lesotho or Eswatini require a written letter of permission from the rental company and a border permit that you buy at the border crossing
- Service areas on the N1 and N3 highways have parking spaces for large vehicles, fresh water taps and 24-hour security
Places to Stay in a Motorhome
| Type of accommodation | Facilities | Cost range |
|---|---|---|
| Full-service caravan park | Electricity, hot showers, laundry | R300–600 per night |
| Municipal campsite | Water tap, basic toilets and showers | R150–300 per night |
| SANParks rest camp | Electric hookup, barbecue area, shared kitchen | R250–500 per night |
Caravan park is the common South African term for a camping ground with facilities that welcomes both caravans and motorhomes. These sites have marked parking spaces, electricity connections and shared bathroom facilities for a nightly fee.
