Driving a Campervan around Spain
- Drive on the right, overtake on the left
- Speed limits (general): up to 120 km/h on motorways called autopistas and autovías for motorhomes ≤3,500 kg (MMA), 90 km/h on secondary roads; motorhomes >3,500 kg have lower limits (e.g., 90 km/h on motorways and 80 km/h on conventional roads). In towns and cities, limits are typically 20/30/50 km/h depending on the street type and signage
- Some toll motorways called "autopistas de peaje" (marked AP) charge fees based on vehicle category (e.g., light vs heavy vehicles, and whether you are towing)
- Low Emission Zones now operate in Madrid, Barcelona and many other large cities; rules vary by city and foreign vehicles may need to register in advance or request an equivalence/authorisation
- Wild camping is prohibited, but overnight parking is usually allowed if you keep awnings, tables and levellers packed away
- Carry a reflective vest and a V-16 hazard warning device for breakdowns (mandatory from 1 January 2026; replaces warning triangles)
- Service areas marked "Área de Servicio" operate 24 hours with fuel, food and sometimes showers
- Border crossings to Portugal and France are straightforward, with no additional permits needed

Frequently Asked Questions
Is wild camping in a motorhome permitted in Spain?
Wild camping (acampada libre) in a motorhome is generally not permitted in Spain, and camping rules are set by the autonomous communities and municipalities (not traffic law).
Overnight parking is usually allowed where parking is permitted, as long as the vehicle is correctly parked and you don’t set up outside (awnings, tables, levellers) or discharge fluids. Many towns also offer dedicated motorhome stopover areas (‘áreas de autocaravanas’), which may be free or low-cost.
In addition, there are plenty of campsites. Prices vary by region and season, but many off-peak stays fall in the €13 to €27 per night range.
