Driving an RV around Bilbao

  • The AP-8/A-8 Cantabrian highway skirts Bilbao. A light RV (vehículo ligero) pays about €13.81 from the Bilbao-area “Accesos Oeste” to Donostia (Zarautz Bar) (IVA included; 2026 tariff table—exact depends on entry/exit).
  • The Artxanda tunnels (Ugasko–Txorierri and La Salve–Txorierri links) are tolled; light vehicles pay €1.55 per pass (IVA included; 2026). Height clearance is monitored, so check the posted gálibo before entering.
  • The low-emission zone (ZBE) applies to Abando and Indautxu Monday to Friday (working days) from 07:00 to 20:00. Vehicles with 0, ECO or C labels can access/circulate/park freely; B-label vehicles can access until 15 June 2025 (and until 31 December 2029 if entering an authorized public parking lot). Vehicles A (no label) are restricted except for listed exemptions.
  • Morning traffic is typically busiest from 08:00 to 09:30 on the BI-623 and BI-631 roads leading into the city. You can park at Etxebarri or Leioa and take the metro instead.
  • The scenic BI-2122 coast road to Getxo and Sopela is narrow with sharp turns, so allow extra time.
  • Service areas on the A-8/AP-8 west of the city provide facilities (fuel/food/washrooms); water taps and overnight parking availability vary, so check the specific area and local signage.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is wild camping in an RV permitted in Spain?

Wild camping (acampada libre) in an RV is generally not permitted in Spain, and camping rules are set by the autonomous communities and municipalities (not traffic law).

Overnight parking is usually allowed where parking is permitted, as long as the vehicle is correctly parked and you don’t set up outside (awnings, tables, levelers) or discharge fluids. Many towns also offer dedicated motorhome stopover areas (“áreas de autocaravanas”), which may be free or low-cost.

In addition, there are plenty of campsites, prices vary by region and season, but many off-peak stays fall in the €13 to €27 per night range.

Do I need a special licence to drive an RV in Spain?

All drivers must have a current and full driver’s licence to rent a vehicle. For foreign licences, an IDP (International Driving Permit) is also required.

Note: policies vary from supplier to supplier. Always check the T&Cs for your rental.
