Driving a Campervan around Houston

  • Sam Houston Tollway, Hardy Toll Road and Grand Parkway all use EZ TAG or TxTag electronic toll systems. A two-axle campervan costs about four dollars to drive half of the Beltway loop.
  • I-10 Katy Express Lanes use variable pricing based on traffic. Motorhomes under ten thousand pounds can use these lanes when an electronic tag is installed.
  • Large vehicles longer than twenty-four feet cannot drive on city streets between 02:00 and 05:00. Use an RV park for overnight parking.
  • Street parking downtown requires payment Monday to Saturday 07:00 to 18:00. Pay using the ParkHouston mobile app and follow the two-hour time limit on most blocks.
  • Heavy rain can flood low-lying roads such as Memorial Drive near Buffalo Bayou. Check Houston TranStar flood warnings before driving.
  • A free dump station is located at Love's Travel Stop on I-10 exit 789 east of the city.
  • Propane refill stations are common on US 59 and the Gulf Freeway but rare on coastal routes toward Galveston Island. Refill your tank before driving south.
  • Summer temperatures regularly exceed one hundred degrees Fahrenheit. Check engine coolant levels and tyre pressure on longer drives.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is free camping allowed in the US?

While free camping is only allowed in designated areas throughout the USA, there are plenty of locations in which you can do this.

Both the US Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management care for millions of acres of land where free camping is allowed.

Many retailers and casinos may also allow you to camp for a night in their parking lot with permission from the owner.

There are also truck stops and rest stops where you can pull up for a night, many of which have facilities included.

Can a child seat or booster seat be fitted in a campervan?

Most campervan rental companies in the US have vehicle options that allow child seats and booster seats.

Not all vehicles may be compatible with a child seat, and not all companies have seats available to rent.

In most cases, it is the responsibility of the renter to install the child restraint.

Can I travel from the US to Mexico in my rental campervan?

Generally, no. Most campervan rental suppliers restrict travel into Mexico for campervans rented in the US. El Monte is the only exception; however, additional insurance is required.

Are there any restrictions on where I can take my RV in the US?

Most rental companies only allow their vehicles to be driven on sealed/bitumen roads.

In addition, note the following restrictions regarding specific areas:

  • Mexico - With the exception of El Monte, travel to Mexico is prohibited in rental vehicles.
  • Death Valley - Restrictions can vary between suppliers but is generally allowed. However, travel may be restricted during certain times of the year. Check with your rental supplier for full details.
  • New York City/Downtown Manhattan - RVs are generally not allowed due to vehicle height restrictions around the city.
  • Canada - RVs are generally allowed; however, travel to certain locations may be restricted during colder seasons.

If you take your vehicle where it is not permitted, you will be liable for all damages incurred and an additional fine may be imposed.

Check your rental agreement for any further restrictions regarding your RV rental.

Note: policies vary from supplier to supplier. Always check the T&Cs for your rental.
