Driving a Campervan around Belfast

  • Northern Ireland has no toll roads. Fees start only after you cross into the Republic of Ireland via the M1 or A1.
  • Stena Line ferries from Cairnryan and Liverpool carry campervans. Check vehicle length and height limits when you book.
  • Belfast plans a clean-air zone but no date is set. Check council updates if your engine is an older diesel.
  • Overnight sleeping in a vehicle is not allowed inside the city boundary. Use official campsites or suburban park and ride areas.
  • Dundonald Park and Ride allows high-roof vans and the Glider G1 bus reaches the city centre in about twenty-five minutes.
  • The Causeway Coastal Route north of Carrickfergus has narrow sections. Give way at passing places and allow extra time.
  • Winter winds off Belfast Lough can push high-sided vans. Reduce speed on open sections of the M5 and A2.

Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of licence do I need to drive a motorhome in the UK?

All drivers must have a current and full driving licence to hire a vehicle. If your licence is from the UK, a standard Category B licence typically covers vehicles up to 3,500 kg MAM (check the vehicle’s MAM before you book). Heavier motorhomes may require Category C1 (3.5–7.5t) or Category C (over 7.5t).

Foreign licences are acceptable if they are in English or accompanied by an accredited English translation; otherwise, an International Driving Permit is required.

Can I hire a motorhome in the UK if I’m under 21?

Minimum driver age and licence-holding requirements vary by supplier and vehicle class. Most campervan hire companies in the UK require the driver to be 21 or over. In addition, you must have held your licence for a specific period of time (generally between 2–5 years). Certain vehicles may be restricted for drivers under the age of 25.

Enter the driver’s age into our search tool and we will filter available vehicles to match.

Drivers need to hold a full licence, and additional insurance for young drivers may also be required.

Can I travel to Ireland or drop off my motorhome in Dublin?

Yes, while Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom, many campervan hire companies have depots in both the UK and Ireland.

One-way trips are a popular way to travel and a great way to see more on your motorhome holiday.

Note that additional one-way fees may apply. The comparison tool will automatically factor this into your total price.

Can I bring my pet with me when hiring a motorhome?

Yes, some hire companies in the UK are pet friendly. These include McRent, Camper Rental UK, Just Go, Apollo, Bunk Campers, Rent Easy, Easy Campervan Hire, and Rockin Vans.

AUK Motorhome Hire do not allow pets in their vehicles.

With all these companies, approval must be obtained before your hire. A service fee will also be charged.

It is your responsibility to keep the vehicle clean, and you will be liable for any damage caused as a result of bringing a pet on board.

The hirer is also responsible for the safe transport of any domestic animals in line with local regulations, as well as complying with any entry restrictions and vaccinations.

Note: policies vary from supplier to supplier. Always check the T&Cs for your rental.
