ASA (Área de Serviço para Autocaravanas) is the Portuguese name for a basic motorhome service area. These areas provide parking space, water supply and waste disposal facilities at approximately €5 – 12 per night.
Portugal strictly prohibits wild/free camping, even on privately owned land. Fines will often be given on the spot if you are caught breaking these rules.
Portugal has over 100 campsites, which start at around €6 per night.
All drivers must have a current and full driver’s licence to hire a vehicle. Drivers are allowed to drive up to 6 months in Portugal without an International Driving Permit (IDP).
In addition, some campervan rental suppliers require the driver to have held their licence for a certain period of time (1–3 years).
Note: policies vary from supplier to supplier. Always check the T&Cs for your rental.
