Driving a Campervan around Spain

  • Drive on the right side, overtake on the left side
  • Speed limits: 120 km/h on highways called autopistas and autovías, 90 km/h on secondary roads, 30 km/h in most towns
  • Some toll highways called "autopistas de peaje" (marked AP) charge fees based on vehicle height below or above 2.4 meters
  • Low Emission Zones now operate in Madrid, Barcelona and many other large cities; foreign vehicles must preregister online or display an accepted emissions sticker
  • Wild camping is prohibited, but overnight parking is usually allowed if you keep awnings, tables and levelers packed away
  • Carry a reflective vest and two warning triangles for breakdowns (required by law)
  • Service areas marked "Área de Servicio" operate 24 hours with fuel, food and sometimes showers
  • Border crossings to Portugal and France are simple with no additional permits needed
