Driving a Campervan around Milan

  • Milan sits on the A1 and A4 highways and is surrounded by the A50, A51 and A52 ring roads giving quick exits towards the Alps, lakes and the rest of Italy
  • The entire city inside the ring roads is a low-emission Area B zone. Older diesel and petrol engines are banned so check your van's Euro emission rating before entry
  • The historic centre is Area C. This is a paid limited-traffic zone. You must buy an entrance ticket before driving through the cameras or you will receive a fine
  • Highways are tolled. Campervans under 3.5 tonnes with a front-axle height above 1.3 metres pay higher rates than cars. Take a ticket when you enter and pay when you exit with card or cash
  • Wild camping is illegal in the Lombardy region. Use campsites or Aree di Sosta which are motorhome parking areas with water and waste disposal for about €5–20 per night
  • Park and Ride lots at metro lines M1, M2 and M3 cost about €2 per day and keep your van outside the busy city centre

Places to Stay in a Motorhome

Site Type Distance to Duomo
Camping Village Città di Milano Urban campsite ~7 km, direct bus to M1 Lotto stop
Area Sosta Milano Navigli Urban motorhome parking area ~5 km, tram 2 to Porta Genova

Area di Sosta is the Italian term for a basic motorhome rest area. It usually offers water, waste disposal and security at a lower price than a full campsite.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is wild camping in a motorhome allowed in Italy?

Wild camping rules are determined by region, but it is generally prohibited in Italy and fines can be heavy (€100–500). If you are unsure about a certain region, check online or visit an information centre.

There are plenty of campsites in Italy, starting at around €20 per night.

What kind of licence do you need to drive a campervan in Italy?
