Driving a Campervan around Belfast

  • Northern Ireland has no toll roads. In the Republic of Ireland, some roads are tolled (including the M50 barrier-free toll) so check Transport Infrastructure Ireland for toll locations, charges and how to pay before you travel.
  • Stena Line ferries from Cairnryan and Liverpool (Birkenhead) carry campervans. Check vehicle length and height limits when you book.
  • Belfast does not currently have a clean-air zone/low emission zone, and Low Emission Zones are not proposed in the Belfast City Air Quality Action Plan 2021–2026. Check council updates if your engine is an older diesel.
  • Overnight sleeping in a vehicle is restricted by parking rules and landowner terms. Belfast City Council off-street public car parks prohibit using the car park or a vehicle for sleeping/camping, so use official campsites or touring parks.
  • Dundonald Park and Ride has published opening hours. Glider G1 serves Dundonald Park and Ride via the city centre; allow extra time as journey times vary with traffic.
  • The Causeway Coastal Route north of Carrickfergus includes winding coastal sections and some tighter stretches on detours. Allow extra time and take care on narrower roads.
  • Winter winds off Belfast Lough can push high-sided vans. Reduce speed on open sections of the M5 and A2.

Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of licence do I need to drive a motorhome in the UK?

All drivers must have a current and full driving licence to hire a vehicle. If your licence is from the UK, a standard Category B licence typically covers vehicles up to 3,500kg MAM (check the vehicle’s MAM before you book). Heavier motorhomes may require Category C1 (3.5–7.5t) or Category C (over 7.5t).

Foreign licences are often accepted for visiting drivers, but the rules depend on where your licence was issued and whether it is in English. You may need an International Driving Permit (IDP) or an official translation—check GOV.UK guidance and your supplier before you book.

Can I hire a motorhome in the UK if I’m under 21?

Minimum driver age and licence-holding requirements vary by supplier and vehicle class. Most campervan hire companies in the UK require the driver to be 21 or over. In addition, you must have held your licence for a specific period of time (generally between 2–5 years). Certain vehicles may be restricted for drivers under the age of 25.

Enter the driver’s age into our search tool and we will filter available vehicles to match.

Drivers need to hold a full licence, and additional insurance for young drivers may also be required.

Can I travel to Ireland or drop off my motorhome in Dublin?

Yes, while Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom, many campervan hire companies have depots in both the UK and Ireland.

One-way trips are a popular way to travel and a great way to see more on your motorhome getaway.

Note that additional one-way fees may apply. The comparison tool will automatically factor this into your total price.

Can I bring my pet with me when hiring a motorhome?

Yes, some hire companies in the UK are pet-friendly. These include Just go, Bunk Campers, Easicampers, and roadsurfer.

Some suppliers may allow pets only with prior written approval, while others may not allow pets (other than assistance/guide dogs) — always check the supplier’s terms before you book.

With all these companies, approval must be obtained before your hire. A service/cleaning fee may also be charged.

It is your responsibility to keep the vehicle clean, and you will be liable for any damage caused as a result of bringing a pet on board.

The hirer is also responsible for the safe transport of any domestic animals in line with local regulations, as well as complying with any entry restrictions and vaccinations.

Note: policies vary from supplier to supplier. Always check the T&Cs for your rental.
