Rome sits on highways A1 and A24 with the A90 Grande Raccordo Anulare ring road circling the city and connecting all routes.
The historic centre has a daytime ZTL (restricted traffic zone). Cameras automatically fine any vehicle that enters without a permit.
A wider Fascia Verde (Green Zone) is a low-emission zone that blocks older vehicles from Monday to Saturday. Newer Euro 5 and Euro 6 campervans can enter this zone.
Most campervans under 3.5 tons use toll class B on highways. Take a ticket when you enter and pay by card or cash when you exit.
Expect heavy traffic on the A90 ring road during morning and evening rush hours. Check traffic updates before driving.
Wild camping is illegal in Italy and fines start around €100. Use campsites or official Aree di Sosta (motorhome service areas) instead.

Area di Sosta is the Italian term for a basic motorhome parking area with services. These locations provide water, waste disposal points and charge a nightly fee of about €5–20.
Wild camping rules are determined by region, but it is generally prohibited in Italy and fines can be heavy (€100–500). If you are unsure about a certain region, check online or visit an information centre.

To rent a campervan in Italy, you must have a valid Standard (Type B) Driving Licence. Most companies prefer drivers to be over 21 years old, but some companies will rent campervans to 18-year-olds. Depending on the rental company, you must also have one to three years of driving experience.
