Driving a Campervan around Houston

  • Sam Houston Tollway, Hardy Toll Road and Grand Parkway all use EZ TAG or TxTag electronic toll systems. A two-axle campervan costs about four dollars to drive half of the Beltway loop.
  • I-10 Katy Express Lanes use variable pricing based on traffic. Motorhomes under ten thousand pounds can use these lanes when an electronic tag is installed.
  • Parking commercial and large vehicles on a public street is prohibited between 02:00 and 06:00, and large vehicles may not park on streets in residential areas except for active loading and unloading. Use a campsite for overnight parking.
  • Street parking in the city centre requires payment Monday to Saturday 07:00 to 18:00. Pay using the ParkHouston mobile app and follow the two-hour time limit on most blocks.
  • Heavy rain can flood low-lying roads such as Memorial Drive near Buffalo Bayou. Check Houston TranStar flood warnings before driving.
  • A free dump station is located at Love's Travel Stop on I-10 exit 789 east of the city.
  • Propane refill stations are common on US 59 and the Gulf Freeway but rare on coastal routes towards Galveston Island. Refill your tank before driving south.
  • Summer temperatures regularly exceed one hundred degrees Fahrenheit. Check engine coolant levels and tyre pressure on longer drives.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is free camping allowed in the US?

Free camping is not universally allowed across the USA; it is typically permitted in designated areas and on many US Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management lands, subject to local rules.

Both the US Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management care for millions of acres of land where free camping is allowed.

Many retailers and casinos may also allow you to camp for a night in their car park with permission from the owner.

There are also truck stops and rest stops where you can park for a night, though rest-area rules vary by state and some prohibit overnight stays.

Can a child seat or booster seat be fitted in a campervan?

Most campervan rental companies in the US have vehicle options that allow child seats and booster seats.

Not all vehicles may be compatible with a child seat, and not all companies have seats available to rent.

In most cases, it is the responsibility of the renter to install the child restraint.

Can I travel from the US to Mexico in my rental campervan?

Generally, no. Most motorhome suppliers restrict travel into Mexico for motorhomes hired in the US. El Monte is an exception to this, however, additional insurance is required.

Are there any restrictions on where I can take my motorhome in the US?

Most hire companies only allow their vehicles to be driven on tarmac roads.

In addition, note the following restrictions regarding specific areas:

  • Mexico - Travel to Mexico is generally prohibited in hire vehicles; some suppliers (such as El Monte) may allow it under certain conditions and with additional insurance.
  • Death Valley - Restrictions can vary between suppliers. Some suppliers restrict travel during the hottest months of the year. Check with your hire supplier for full details.
  • New York City/Manhattan City Centre - Some hire suppliers restrict travel in or through Manhattan (and sometimes parts of NYC). Check your hire agreement for full details.
  • Canada - Motorhomes are generally allowed; however, travel to certain locations may be restricted during colder seasons.

If you take your vehicle where it is not permitted, you will be liable for all damages incurred, and an additional fine may be imposed.

Check your hire agreement for any further restrictions regarding your motorhome hire.

Note: policies vary from supplier to supplier. Always check the T&Cs for your rental.
