Driving a Campervan around Belgium

  • Motorways (called autosnelwegen) are toll free for vehicles under 3.5 tons. The Liefkenshoek Tunnel near Antwerp costs about €7 during off-peak hours.
  • Low-emission zones operate in Brussels, Antwerp and Ghent. Diesel engines older than Euro 5 standard may not enter without purchasing a day pass.
  • Street parking zones use color coding. Pay at the parking meter or through the 4411 mobile app and check the posted time limits.
  • Wild camping is forbidden throughout Belgium. Stay only at registered camping sites or in marked "bivakzone" areas that allow one-night stops.
  • LPG fuel, marked as GPL, is common on major routes but limited in the Ardennes region, so refuel before heading south.
  • Speed cameras are frequent. The standard speed limits are 120 km/h on motorways, 90 km/h on main roads and 50 km/h in towns.
  • You must carry a warning triangle and reflective jacket in your vehicle. Belgian police can issue an immediate fine if these items are missing.
