Driving a Campervan around Faro

  • The A22 Via do Infante toll highway crosses the Algarve and connects Faro with Lagos, Portimão and the Spanish border. It connects with the A2 for a direct route north to Lisbon.
  • Campervans with a front axle height above 1.10 m usually fall into toll Class 2. Pay with a Via Verde transponder or online for electronic-only sections.
  • Faro has no low-emission zone. Only Lisbon and Porto have ZER restrictions, so no special sticker is needed in Faro.
  • Outside protected areas you may stay in the same municipality for up to 48 hours. Fines start at about €120 if you exceed this limit or camp in Natura 2000 sites or coastal reserves.
  • Wild camping elsewhere is illegal. Use official campsites or ASA motorhome stops instead.
  • The free N125 coastal road can be slow during summer vacation traffic, so plan extra time and fill the fuel tank before remote sections.
  • Long-stay parking lots near Faro Airport offer park-and-ride shuttles that reach the terminal in about six minutes and cost less than parking closer to the old town.

Places to Stay in a Motorhome

Site Type Distance to Old Town
Faro Campervan Park ASA motorhome area about 5 km, taxi or bus in 15 minutes
Camping Municipal de Faro Beach campsite about 8 km, city bus in 20 minutes
Camping Albufeira Full-service campsite 45 km west, direct bus from Faro area

ASA stands for Área de Serviço para Autocaravanas. This is Portugal's basic motorhome stop, usually costing 5 to 12 euros per night, and offers hard standing, water and a dump station.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is free camping in an RV permitted in Portugal?

Wild/free camping in Portugal is not generally permitted, and enforcement can be strict in certain areas. If you are caught breaking the rules, you may receive an on-the-spot fine.

Portugal has many campsites across the country, with prices varying widely by region and season.

Do I need a special licence to drive an RV in Portugal?

All drivers must have a current and full driver’s licence to rent a vehicle. Drivers are allowed to drive up to 6 months in Portugal without an International Driving Permit (IDP).

In addition, some RV rental suppliers require the driver to have held their licence for a certain period of time (1-3 years).

Note: policies vary from supplier to supplier. Always check the T&Cs for your rental.
