Driving an RV around Faro
- The A22 Via do Infante toll highway crosses the Algarve and connects Faro with Lagos, Portimão and the Spanish border. It connects with the A2 for a direct route north to Lisbon.
- RVs with a front axle height above 1.10 meters (3 ft 7 in) usually fall into toll Class 2. Pay with a Via Verde transponder or online for electronic-only sections.
- Faro has no low-emission zone like Lisbon’s ZER, so no special emission sticker is needed in Faro.
- Outside protected/coastal planning areas and in the absence of municipal rules, overnight parking (pernoita) in an IMT-approved RV is limited to 48 hours in the same municipality. Fines can be €60–300, and €120–600 in Natura 2000, protected, or coastal planning areas.
- Camping-style behavior (awnings, tables, occupying space beyond the vehicle) is prohibited outside authorized places. Use official campgrounds or ASA RV stops instead.
- The free N125 coastal road can be slow during summer vacation traffic, so plan extra time and fill the gas tank before remote sections.
- Long-stay parking lots near Faro Airport offer park-and-ride shuttles that reach the terminal in about six minutes and cost less than parking closer to the old town.
Places to Stay in a Motorhome
| Site | Type | Distance to Old Town |
|---|---|---|
| Faro Campervan Park | ASA motorhome area | about 5 km, taxi or bus in 15 minutes |
| Camping Municipal de Faro | Beach campsite | about 8 km, city bus in 20 minutes |
| Camping Albufeira | Full-service campsite | 45 km west, direct bus from Faro area |
ASA stands for Área de Serviço para Autocaravanas. This is Portugal's basic motorhome stop, usually costing 5 to 12 euros per night, and offers hardstanding, water and a dump point.
