Driving a Campervan around Miami

  • Florida Turnpike and many bridges use the SunPass electronic toll system. Toll amounts vary by trip distance and axles—use the official SunPass Toll Calculator; Card Sound Road is $2.13 on SunPass for two-axle vehicles (as of Oct 1, 2025).
  • Large vehicles are often restricted from overnight parking on city streets; breaking local rules can result in towing and fines (towing charges can exceed $250 depending on tow class).
  • Beach parking with parking meters has zone-based maximum time limits. Pay using the ParkMobile app (Miami Beach) or PayByPhone/ParkMobile (City of Miami) or use day-rate car parks near PortMiami.
  • Waste disposal points are most commonly found at motorhome parks/campsites. These are useful when returning toward the airport.
  • Hurricane season is June to November. Bridges close when winds exceed 35 mph, so plan an alternative inland route.
  • I-95 Express Lanes require a SunPass (or other Florida-accepted transponder) and use dynamic pricing. Authorised users are typically two-axle vehicles; multi-axle vehicles are not allowed unless indicated by regulatory signs.
  • Petrol stations and retailers that provide propane/LPG refills are available in the Miami–Homestead area, but options can be more limited the further south you travel. Fill your tank before driving to the Keys.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I camp in Florida?

As in the rest of the US, free camping is only allowed in designated areas, which can include national parks, state parks, truck stops, or rest stops as well as certain car parks with permission from the store manager.

Florida is home to numerous campsites and motorhome resorts, including the famous Fort Wilderness Campground at Walt Disney World.

A night at a motorhome park can cost around $20–$80 (USD) per night. The sites are suitable for all vehicle types, from caravans to larger motorhomes.

What licence do you need to drive a campervan in the USA?

All drivers must have a current and full driving licence to hire a vehicle. Foreign licences are generally acceptable if they are in English or accompanied by an accredited English translation, otherwise, an International Driving Permit is required.

In addition to your driving licence, you will often be required to show your passport at the time of pick-up.

Some companies may require an IDP or official English translation depending on the language of your licence. For example, Road Bear requires an international driving licence translation if the original licence doesn't have an English translation, and Britz recommends an international driving licence for translation purposes.

Can I rent a campervan in the US if I’m under 21?

Most campervan rental suppliers in the USA require the main driver to be 21 years of age or older. A full driver’s licence is required.

Some companies require the driver to be 25 or older. Our comparison tool will show you which vehicles are available for your age bracket.

Are there any restrictions on where I can take my RV in the US?

Most hire companies only allow their vehicles to be driven on sealed roads.

In addition, note the following restrictions regarding specific areas:

  • Mexico - Travel to Mexico is generally prohibited in hire vehicles; some suppliers (such as El Monte) may allow it under certain conditions and with additional insurance.
  • Death Valley - Restrictions can vary between suppliers. Some suppliers restrict travel during the hottest months of the year. Check with your hire supplier for full details.
  • New York City/Downtown Manhattan - Some hire suppliers restrict travel in or through Manhattan (and sometimes parts of NYC). Check your hire agreement for full details.
  • Canada - Motorhomes are generally allowed; however, travel to certain locations may be restricted during colder seasons.

If you take your vehicle where it is not permitted, you will be liable for all damage incurred, and an additional fine may be imposed.

Check your hire agreement for any further restrictions regarding your motorhome hire.

What happens if the campervan breaks down during my trip?

Many hire companies include roadside assistance (often 24/7). If you have a mechanical issue, pull over safely and contact the hire company’s roadside/‘on-road care’ team first for instructions.

Mechanical breakdowns are typically handled by the hire company unless the issue is caused by misuse or damage. Do not authorise major repairs without approval. Authorisation thresholds vary by supplier (often $100+). Keep all receipts and documentation for any approved repairs, as small repairs may be reimbursed per the hire agreement.

What are the differences between Class A, B, and C motorhomes?

A wide variety of campers are available in the US, from smaller estate cars up to large motorhomes. Some of the common types include:

  • Class A: (21-45 ft) The biggest and most expensive; can be hard to manoeuvre if you are new to driving motorhomes but often comes equipped with additional luxuries.

Class A motorhomes are built on either a vehicle chassis, commercial truck chassis, or a commercial bus chassis, and run on either diesel or petrol, depending on the type of engine.

Usually, Class A vehicles are fully equipped with all amenities and a large living space.

  • Class B: (17-19 ft) Small and affordable, easier to drive or manoeuvre. Class B vehicles are often known as campervans/conversions and are built on a smaller chassis than the Class A.

Some Class B vehicles may include a toilet or freshwater tanks but not always. Class B vehicles usually have basic cooking equipment, folding beds, and limited storage space.

Class B vehicles are great for short-term getaways.

  • Class C: (20-33 ft) Medium-sized, moderate storage space, and a few extra luxuries.

Class C vehicles are a smaller version of the Class A motorhome. They are built on a truck or van cutaway chassis and operate on a petrol-powered engine.

The Class C motorhome generally has sleeping quarters above the cab and more sleeping space in the back. Some Class Cs also have a slide-out option that helps increase the living space when the motorhome is parked.

Class C vehicles come equipped with a good amount of facilities including a self-contained toilet, refrigerator, heating or air conditioning and cooking facilities.

Class C vehicles are very versatile and are great for both short or long-term getaways.

Our comparison tool will show you the specifications of each vehicle available to ensure you find a camper suitable for your needs.

Note: policies vary from supplier to supplier. Always check the T&Cs for your rental.
