Driving a Campervan around Johannesburg

  • Electronic toll gantries in Gauteng province were switched off on 11 April 2024. Cash toll plazas still operate on the N4 highway and some stretches of the N1 highway
  • The N1 Western Bypass, N3 Eastern Bypass and N12 Southern Bypass form a ring around the metro area and have heavy traffic from 06:30 to 09:00
  • Light motorhomes may travel at 120 km/h on freeways. Heavy vehicles above 3.5 tons are limited to 100 km/h
  • You must keep two red warning triangles in the driver's cabin. A reflective vest and small fire extinguisher are strongly recommended
  • Night travel on rural roads is dangerous due to stray livestock and pedestrians without lights
  • For city visits, park at Sandton, Marlboro or Midrand Gautrain stations then take the train to the city center
  • Cross-border trips to Botswana, Lesotho or Eswatini need written permission from the rental company and a road-user permit bought at the border
