Driving a Campervan around Cape Town

  • Chapman's Peak Drive charges about R60 per campervan and does not allow vehicles taller than 3.4 meters
  • Huguenot Tunnel on the N1 highway costs around R42 for a light motorhome, but Cape freeways are otherwise toll-free
  • Strong south-easterly winds in summer can push high-sided vans on bridges along the N1 and N2 highways
  • Morning traffic congestion peaks from 07:00 to 09:30 in the city center. You can park at Table View or Century City and take the MyCiTi bus into town
  • Only use registered camping sites if you plan to sleep in the van overnight
  • The R27 West Coast road has few fuel stations north of Blouberg. Fill your tank before leaving the metro area
  • Steep hills and crosswinds on Sir Lowry's Pass (N2) require low gear and a recommended speed of 80 km/h for motorhomes
