Driving a Campervan around Alaska

  • There are no toll roads, but distances are very long, so plan fuel stops before leaving major towns.
  • The Dalton, Denali and McCarthy highways include long unpaved sections that can cancel your rental insurance; check your contract carefully.
  • Summer daylight can last twenty hours, but many wildlife collisions happen at dusk, so drive at moderate speeds and keep lights on low beam.
  • Fuel prices increase sharply north of Fairbanks; carry an extra jerrycan (fuel container) if traveling up the Dalton Highway.
  • Alaska Marine Highway ferries accept motorhomes; book early for summer sailings between Prince Rupert, Juneau and Whittier.
  • Overnight parking in roadside areas is generally accepted outside city limits if you leave no trace, but camping is not allowed within Anchorage and Fairbanks city areas.
  • Many state recreation sites have no dump station; free public dump stations are located near major highway junctions.
  • In winter, studded tires are legal statewide and chains are recommended for mountain passes such as Thompson Pass near Valdez.
